Diversions Excursions

We love scavenger hunts that are filled with puzzles and riddles, and we wanted to bring one to Portsmouth….and so Diversions Excursions was born!

What are Diversions Excursions?

Diversions Excursions are outdoor scavenger hunts in downtown Portsmouth. You will receive a story and a packet of clues, puzzles, and riddles to help you solve the mystery. The clues will send you around downtown, along popular and not-as-popular streets. In addition to a fun experience solving riddles, we hope you will also enjoy a tour of this lovely city!

As a new venture just launched, we have one hunt available: The Treasure of John Paul Jones. We are hoping to receive positive feedback and launch additional hunts in the near future.

How Do I Buy a Hunt?

Hunts are currently offered as a walk-in service. Visit Diversions Puzzles & Games at 123 Congress Street and a sales associate will be happy to set you up with everything you need to play. Hunts will be sold up to 2.5 hours before the store closes to ensure you have ample time to experience the hunt to its fullest. Please allow an extra 10 minutes to sign your liability release forms and receive your hunt information. Below are the hours you can come in and sign up:

Monday through Saturday: 9:00am to 6:30pm

Sunday: 10:00am to 3:30pm

Hunts will also end at Diversions Puzzles & Games. Please note that our store closes at 9:00pm Monday through Saturday and 6:00pm on Sunday. If you have not arrived back by the time the store closes, we will not be able to stay open late to await your return, and no refunds will be given as a result.

Who Can Play?

Anyone can play, but this is especially designed for adults who enjoy puzzles! Children may find this too hard on their own, and so we don’t recommend bringing them along. We find this hunt is best in teams of 2 to 4 players, but you can certainly play as a smaller or larger group if you choose!

How Much Does It Cost?

Hunts are $24.99 for anyone over 8 and free for those under 8.  We are offering special pricing during our “soft launch” from July 3 to July 20 of $14.99 per person. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase hunts in advance, so if you want the reduced pricing, please be sure to come before July 21!

Common Questions

Can I request a refund?

We cannot provide refunds for any reason, including weather and not being able to complete the challenge. Please note that our store closes at 9:00pm Monday through Saturday and 6:00pm on Sunday. If you have not arrived back by the time the store closes, we will not be able to stay open late to await your return, and no refunds will be given as a result.

Do I need special equipment?

Yes, at least one player will need a smartphone. The hunt is not app-based, but you will need access to the internet at one point during the hunt. You may also find a map app useful if you are not familiar with Portsmouth.

How long does a hunt take?

Hunt times can range from 1 to 2 hours, depending on how fast you are at solving puzzles! We suggest that you plan for 2 hours.

How long is the walk?

The hunt takes you along 1.5 miles of downtown Portsmouth. Comfortable shoes are suggested. Portsmouth is well-maintained, but some sidewalks and pathways may have uneven ground.

Is it rain or shine?

This is up to you! We will not be able to provide refunds due to weather, so please check the forecast before purchasing a hunt. We do recommend that you avoid rain or use an umbrella, as the hunt is done on paper, and water and paper don’t mix well!

Is it safe?

Portsmouth is a safe city with clearly marked crosswalks and wide sidewalks. That said, we must advise you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. The town gets especially busy during summer and fall months, with lots of foot and auto traffic. Please avoid blocking sidewalks, use crosswalks to cross the street, and don’t puzzle-solve while walking!

Is this timed?

This is your choice. We will have a leaderboard in the store with the fastest times listed, so if you want to try to beat the time, please do! If you prefer a more leisurely hunt, however, we can skip timing you. Stop along the way to enjoy the scenic city and great cafés but remember the hunt itself does take 1-2 hours to complete, so allow plenty of time.

Is there a prize?

There is no prize currently offered other than a feeling of accomplishment and maybe the best time!
